Yu grew up in Sichuan province, went to Tianjin University of Science and Technology where he received BS and MS degree. He then went to Guelph for graduate school and did his PhD work in Ray Lu’ lab at Molecular and Cellular Biology Department where he focused on cellular stress response. Yu did his postdoctoral work on obesity and diabetes at Boston University Medical School with Mengwei Zang. He joined the faculty of Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health (Institute for Nutritional Sciences, Shanghai Institute for Biological Sciences), Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013.
